What a serial lookup cannot prove

A plausible historical allocation is useful evidence, but it is not an authentication certificate.

No authentication

A result does not prove that an item is genuine, original, unmodified, lawfully owned, under warranty, or absent from stolen-property reports. A serial can be copied, altered, transferred with a part, or read incorrectly.

No certain manufacture date

Allocation year, broad lens-year estimate, model period, production date, delivery date, and sale date are different. The archive labels them separately and leaves production blank when it is not supported.

When to use a specialist

Contact Leica or a qualified independent specialist for high-value purchases, insurance, provenance, conversions, special or military equipment, suspected counterfeit items, and modern products outside public coverage.
